Local Flavor

Location: Robertsdale, AL (High 34, Low 17)

Over the past couple of days, we’ve gotten the lay of the land around here. The park is kind of in the middle of nowhere, but only about 12 miles from the actual town of Robertsdale (which is where the Camping World is that we went to on Monday afternoon). It really didn’t take too long to get our bearings. We are about 40 minutes or so from the beaches of the Gulf Coast, and we are contemplating taking a ride over on Friday if the weather gets as nice as they are saying it will.

We got a call from some friends that we met this year at Amazon who wanted to find a spot to get together, so we made plans to meet today at a local restaurant we’ve heard a lot about – Lambert’s Cafe.

It was great to see Joe, Donna and Kitty and catch up on each other’s news since we parted ways on December 21st. You really do get close to people when you spend 40 – 60 hours a week working with them for three months. :)

We had a really nice visit. The food was pretty good too. Lambert’s Cafe servers bring around to the tables what they call “pass arounds”, like boiled cabbage, fried okra, fried potatoes and onions, etc. and are also famous for their “throwed rolls.” On top of that you get your entree and two sides. We took the advice of people who have already been there and filled up on bread and the pass arounds, and brought enough food for a whole other meal home with us.

So many of these campgrounds advertise walking trails, and they always make them sound so extensive, but we have found that most of them are not. Today’s was the same – basically one trail that went in a circle and only about a half mile in length. But it was a nice little walk anyway, and we were happy to get out and get a little fresh air, if not a lot of exercise.

We are happy that it’s supposed to start warming up tomorrow – we’re ready!!

    1. haha We are doing our travels this winter in just about the opposite way. In a little over a month we will be where you are right now too. I wonder if our paths are going to cross at some point as we pass.

  3. Well most folks can't run half marathons, so that half mile is about all we can take on...... LOL

  4. We were there last Feb. and went to the one in Sikeston MO. in Oct. You fill up on the pass arounds and take most of the meal home.
