I would like to extend a warm welcome to Rod and Loyce Ivers. Rod, I’ve been loving the photos you’re taking with that new camera of yours. We may just have to get one! :) Thanks for joining us for the ride.
As I stated in my description of myself on the blog, Harry and I live in upstate NY. I am a native “Upstater”, (yeah, I just made that word up) – having lived in this part of NY my whole life. However, compared to where I grew up, where I live now would be considered downstate by people in my home town. It’s a common irritation among upstate New Yorkers that the upper half of the state seems to be somewhat forgotten. Talk to someone in New York City, and they consider upstate NY to be Westchester or Putnam counties! :) No way – I’m talking really upstate NY here!! If you look at the map below you can find Putnam county…it is WAY down by the city. If you look a few counties higher, you will see where I currently live – in a small town in Rensselaer County (and yes, it is misspelled on the map.) And now, if you look WAY up, you will see where I grew up – AuSable Forks is in Clinton County. Once you get past the top border of Clinton County, you are in Canada!!
So…this weekend I’m heading “upstate” to the Adirondack region of NY. (The Adirondack Park, of course, is huge, and encompasses a large part of the top part of the state – but AuSable Forks is one town in the park.) Harry and I are going up to spend the weekend with my mother, who still lives in the same house I grew up in. We’re going to spend at least part of the weekend with friends of my mom’s at Fern Lake….it should be a fun weekend. Hope to be able to get in some bike rides and read some of those books I bought! Not sure when I will be able to post again – it might be Monday or Tuesday! But I will take lots of pictures, and catch up on our weekend as soon as I can. :)
Coming from South Jersey, I can relate to your saying your part of NY is the forgotten area. We always say there are two New Jersey's - north and south. People think all NJ is cities and urban.
ReplyDeleteHowever, down here in Cumberland County our main industries are nurseries, farms and food processing. (At one time glass manufacturing but that has taken a hit due to cheaper overseas products)
They don't call NJ the Garden State for nothing. Although each year unfortunately there are a lot less farms.
Enjoy your "home" and hometown!
Thanks Phyllis! :) We are looking forward to it - for being only 2 1/2 hours away, we really don't get up there too often. I have to go to work first, unfortunately, so we won't be leaving until mid-afternoon.
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful time and hug your Mom.
ReplyDeletei have a friend with a lake house (you guys call them camps) on lake Sacandaga in Fulton county... wonderful spot to be in august as is Sarasota for the ponies...
ReplyDeleteHope you had a fun and relaxing weekend! It's great you got to go see your mom....lucky!!
